In addition to the beautiful sights and unique culture in Huntsville, the population reflects many different religions and faiths. Residents and visitors alike gather to practice their faith and serve their communities. A study by Pew Research Center in 2023 found that 73% of Alabama residents identify as Christian. 2020 data from the U.S. Religion Census, conducted by The Association of Religious Data Archives, shows that the Southern Baptist Convention is the largest belief system in the Huntsville metro area with roughly 86,000 local members, followed by nondenominational Christian churches with more than 45,000 members, and the Catholic Church with almost 37,000 members. In addition to these, other faiths are present in the area such as Churches of Christ, Judaism, Buddhism, and more.
Southern Baptist Convention
As of 2020, 137 Southern Baptist churches were located in Huntsville. Many of the churches offer bible studies, children’s ministry, Sunday schools, interest groups, grief support, and more. There are many congregations, including Whitesburg Baptist Church, West Huntsville Baptist Church, and First Baptist Church Huntsville. Several of the churches have attached schools, such as Calvary Baptist Academy and Whitesburg Christian Academy, which offer faith-focused educations and Bible-based curriculums.
Nondenominational Christian Churches
Sometimes also referred to as independent churches, nondenominational Christian churches make up a large portion of Huntsville’s faith community. There are many congregations in the area, such as Church of the Highlands, The Rock Family Worship Center, and CrossPointe Church in Madison. Many of the churches offer services in Spanish. Several area schools offer nondenominational Christian education opportunities, and for those seeking higher education opportunities, Huntsville Bible College is an accredited, nondenominational post-secondary school that prepares individuals to become preachers and church leaders with associate’s, bachelor’s, and master’s programs, as well as a doctorate of ministry program.
Catholic
Huntsville has a strong Catholic population, boasting almost 37,000 members of nine local congregations as of 2020. St. Mary of the Visitation Catholic Church is one of the oldest in the area, with construction completed in 1872. Other churches include Holy Spirit Catholic Church and Our Lady, Help of Christians Catholic Church. Several Catholic schools serve the region, such as Holy Spirit Regional Catholic School and St. John Paul II Catholic High School.
Methodist
Methodists make up a large percentage of faith representation in Huntsville, with an estimated 29,971 members as of 2020. The First United Methodist Church, one of the oldest churches in Alabama, was built in 1822, then rebuilt after a fire during the Civil War. The church remains in downtown Huntsville, hosting five services each Sunday, in addition to other faith events throughout the week, as well as an infant through kindergarten daycare and education program for families. Trinity United Methodist offers in-person worship services as well as live-streamed worship services.
Churches of Christ
Also commonly known as Church of Christ, there are several Churches of Christ congregations in Huntsville. Central Church of Christ has been established in downtown Huntsville since 1929, offering a variety of ministries and Bible classes. The church also operates an addiction recovery center, His Way, which was founded in 2007. Located in West Huntsville, the West Huntsville Church of Christ offers a variety of worship services, Bible studies, live sermons, and mission trips, in addition to ministries for the deaf.
Judaism
Temple B’Nai Sholom, located downtown, is the oldest synagogue in continuous use in Alabama and hosts Shabbat services, Torah study, and affinity groups. Locals and visitors can learn more about Judaism and Temple B’nai Sholom at the Huntsville Jewish Heritage Center located inside the temple.
Buddhism
Green Mountain Zen Center, a Zen Buddhist community in Huntsville, has twice-a-week in-person services as well as virtual services, Sunday meditations, Dharma discussions, and occasional retreats. Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche, a Tibetan Buddhist teacher and meditation master, founded the Huntsville Shambhala Group in 2015. The group hosts public meditations and spiritual teachings in the Shambhala and Buddhist traditions.
Islam
The Huntsville Islamic Center serves the Muslim community in Huntsville and has a variety of services, community events and gatherings, youth groups, Sunday school, and resources for newly practicing Muslims. The Islamic Academy of Huntsville is a fully accredited school for Pre-K through eighth grade that combines academic excellence with Islamic values.
