Ranking No. 5 on Niche’s 2025 list of the best colleges in the state, the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) has earned a reputation as a leading public research university. To accommodate a student body of more than 8,500, the university has six colleges that offer over 100 degree programs. Its nearly 500-acre campus is home to 17 high-tech research centers and labs – responsible for approximately $154 million in yearly research expenditures. UAH also maintains partnerships with federal agencies and leading organizations including NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center, the Missile Defense Agency, and the HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology, which complement the university’s rigorous academic programs. 

Alabama A&M University, which recently celebrated the 150th anniversary of its founding, was named one of the top 50 universities in the South on U.S. News & World Report’s 2025 list. The school provides over 60 undergraduate, graduate, and certificate programs and concentrations, involving engineering, agricultural sciences, business, education, and the arts. The picturesque campus, located on “The Hill,” provides a traditional college atmosphere and includes historic buildings and modern facilities.

Boasting affordability and flexibility, Drake State Community & Technical College allows students to continue their education in programs ranging from accounting and business administration to esthetics, hospitality management, and nursing. The community college plays a critical role in preparing students for immediate employment and career advancement.

Renowned for its faith-based education and commitment to service, Oakwood University is a private Seventh-day Adventist institution. The university offers 50+ majors and several graduate programs, with strengths in the health sciences, theology, business, and education. Another local faith-based institution is Huntsville Bible College, conferring degrees in ministry and theology.

Huntsville is also home to several satellite campuses. Faulkner University’s Huntsville campus offers associate and bachelor’s degrees tailored for working professionals. For those interested in aviation or aerospace, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University at Huntsville’s Redstone Arsenal is part of a larger network providing the most comprehensive collection of air and space-related degrees in the world.

A short drive away, Decatur-based Calhoun Community College makes higher education affordable and accessible to 10,000 students in its four-county service area, while also providing smooth transfer options to four-year universities. Calhoun partners with Athens State University to oversee the Alabama Center for the Arts, which offers affordable arts degrees with a private arts college experience.

In nearby Athens, Athens State University is known for its upper-division programs that cater to transfer and nontraditional students. With a strong focus on adult learners and career advancement, Athens State offers both in-person and online courses designed to meet the needs of the working professional. 

Alabama prioritizes higher education with agencies like the Alabama Commission on Higher Education, which seeks to give Alabama citizens reasonable access to quality collegiate and university education. The Commission is integral in policy planning, resource allocation, and advocacy for students and educational institutions statewide.
